Boards of Studies and Course Advisory Committees

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Introduction

Boards of Studies and Course Advisory Committees may be established to oversee cross disciplinary degrees/diplomas/subject areas and they shall advise appropriate Faculties on matters pertaining to these degrees/diplomas/subject areas.

The following Boards of Studies are currently in place

  • Environmental Science, attached to the Faculty of Science

  • Marine Science, also attached to the Faculty of Science.

Terms of Reference

The Board of Studies or Course Advisory Committee shall, through the appropriate Faculty Executive Committee:

  • recommend on policies regarding the furthering of the particular degree/diploma/ subject area in the University;

  • sponsor and coordinate academic planning and programming in the University in relation to the degree/diploma/subject area;

  • recommend on the introduction of new subjects or courses and the modification or elimination of existing subjects or courses as well as the overall structure of courses, including entry requirements, pre-requisites and co-requisites;

  • be responsible for coordination of the program of academic advice to students within the degree/diploma/subject area to ensure that it is appropriate, accurate and helpful;

  • advise on the forms of assessment to be used for the degree/diploma/subject area;

  • review the results of all subjects in the degree/diploma/subject area;

  • recommend on changes to the composition of the Board of Studies or Course Advisory Committee;

  • advise the Dean on the adequacy and deployment of resources to achieve the University's objectives in the degree/diploma/subject area;

  • report on any matter referred to it by the Faculty, the Dean, the Academic Senate or the Vice-Chancellor;

  • exercise such authority as is delegated to it.

Membership

The Boards of Studies shall consist of:

  • the Dean or standing nominee as Chairperson;
  • the Coordinator for the degree/diploma/subject area, if appropriate;
  • one representative from each Department and School offering subjects towards the degree/diploma/subject area;
  • one student representative to be elected by and from students undertaking the degree/diploma/subject area;
  • each Board of Studies may, by resolution, include in its membership representatives of Departments, Schools and Centres which have a specific interest in the Board, but which are not represented under sub-paragraph 3;
  • each Board of Studies may, by resolution, invite the University Librarian or standing nominee to be in attendance at meetings of the Board with full rights of audience and debate.

Quorum

The quorum for any meeting of the Board or Advisory Committee shall be one half or, where one half is not a whole number, the whole number next higher than one half of the total number of members for the time being of the Board.

General

Minutes of Board of Studies meetings shall be forwarded to the Faculty, except in the case of the Board of Foundation Studies. Normally, minutes will not be forwarded to Senate.
