Terms of Reference Procedures for meetings of Assessment Committees for courses delivered in Australia are set out in the Assessment Committee Guidelines, which require that proper records of decisions be kept and due process followed.
The Faculty Assessment Committee shall: - Be responsible for oversight of the assessment processes and procedures within the Faculty.
- Receive results recommended by the Head of each relevant academic unit for subjects studied by candidates enrolled in courses offered by that faculty.
- Determine, within approved policy and following due process, the results for subjects studied by candidates enrolled in courses offered by that faculty and in so doing:
a) may request the Head or nominee of an academic unit to reconsider any recommended mark; b) may, in the absence of the relevant Head or nominee of an academic unit, vary any recommended mark; and, c) may request the Head or nominee of an academic unit to provide reasons, in writing, for not submitting a mark for a particular candidate. - Determine, in accordance with the General Course Rules and the Supplementary Assessment Guidelines, those students who merit an offer of a supplementary assessment and in each such case, the nature of the supplementary assessment to be undertaken having regard to the following criteria:
- the student’s overall academic performance
- whether there is evidence of improved performance by the student over the course of the subject
- whether there is a reasonable expectation, based on the student’s performance, that the student can achieve a pass in the subject if given the opportunity to undertake a Supplementary Assessment
- whether the student has attempted all assessment tasks
- the student’s demonstrated engagement with the subject
- whether the student is a potential graduand
- any other relevant circumstances.
- Declare the final marks and approve them for release.
- Report on any matter referred to it by the Academic Senate or the
Vice-Chancellor.
Note: Where only the Faculty Assessment Committee exists in a faculty, the responsibilities and membership of that Committee should reflect those set out in the Terms of Reference for Academic Unit Assessment Committees. Membership The Faculty Assessment Committee shall consist of: - the Dean or nominee as Chair
- the Sub-Dean / Associate Dean
- the Heads, or their nominees with delegated authority, of all academic units offering subjects for courses for which the Faculty has responsibility
- other academic staff, as agreed by the Chair
Each Faculty may, with the agreement of constituent academic units, by resolution, include additional representation from the Faculty academic staff as deemed appropriate. The Committee will have a quorum of five members of the Committee who fall into one of the following categories: Dean, Sub-Dean, Associate Dean, Head of Academic Unit, Subject Coordinator. Where only the Faculty Assessment Committee exists in a faculty, the quorum requirements for Unit Assessment Committees will apply. | |
