The Standing Committee of Senate

  Terms of Reference

The Standing Committee of Senate shall:

  • review all matters referred to the Academic Senate to determine those matters which are in conformity with existing policy procedure, precedent or practice and to take action on such matters consistent with the terms of reference of Senate, without forwarding the matters to Senate; 
  • advise the Academic Senate of all decisions taken as above by forwarding the Minutes of the Committee to Senate;
  • provide draft resolutions for all items on the agenda of meetings of the Academic Senate;
  • take such action as it deems necessary to obtain information or clarification from appropriate committees or officers of the University before presenting items for consideration at a meeting of the Academic Senate;
  • advise the Academic Senate on the formulation of policies for teaching, scholarship and research and all related academic matters;
  • consider and report through the Academic Senate or directly as appropriate on any matter referred to it by the Council or the Vice-Chancellor.
  • exercise such delegated authority as the Council may from time to time determine after it has considered the advice of the Academic Senate.

 Membership

  • The Standing Committee of Senate shall consist of:
    • Chairperson of the Academic Senate, who shall be Chairperson of the Committee
    • Vice-Chancellor
    • Senior Deputy Vice Chancellor
    • Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic)
    • Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International)
    • Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research)
    • Deputy Chairperson of the Academic Senate
    • Dean of Students
    • six other members elected by and from the members of the Academic Senate
    • if not otherwise elected, a student member of the Academic Senate elected by the Academic Senate
    • subject to the provision that at least two members shall be female and two shall be male provided that at least two females and two males accept nomination
  • The Vice-Principal (Administration) or standing nominee shall normally be in attendance at meetings.

 Quorum

The quorum for any meeting of the Standing Committee shall be one half or, where one half is not a whole number, the whole number next higher than one half of the total number of members, excluding those on leave, for the time being of the Standing Committee.

 General

  • A Dean may attend meetings of the Standing Committee with full rights of audience and debate when items within the terms of reference of a Faculty are discussed.
  • The Chairperson of a Senate Committee may attend meetings of the Standing Committee with full rights of audience and debate when items within the terms of reference of that committee are discussed.
