Things To Do
Wollongong’s location, climate and multicultural CBD combine for a relaxed, but cosmopolitan lifestyle, with an array of cultural, recreational and sporting activities on offer.
Culture & the arts
Artists have been drawn to the Illawarra region for inspiration throughout history and some of their works are on display at the Wollongong City Gallery – alongside a permanent collection of contemporary Aboriginal art. The gallery is part of the CBD’s cultural precinct – also home to the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre, which stages local and touring opera, musicals, comedy, ballet and concerts.
Wollongong Conservatorium of Music overlooks the Botanic Gardens, next to the University of Wollongong, and the Illawarra Museum focuses on Australian history.
WIN Sports & Entertainment Centre hosts cultural events including international concerts, and the Science Centre features a planetarium and laser concert.
Nan Tien Temple, known as ‘Southern Paradise’, is the largest Buddhist temple in the Southern Hemisphere. It holds regular events such as meditation retreats, excursions and art and craft classes.
