A UOW research scholarship can provide you with financial independence so you can focus fully on your research.
We offer four types of postgraduate research scholarship:
- Australian Postgraduate Award
- University Postgraduate Award
- Australian Postgraduate Award Industry
- Matching scholarships
Several sponsored, research-specific scholarships are also available.
Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) and University Postgraduate Award (UPA)
Both scholarships provide a stipend (living allowance) and a thesis binding allowance. The 2009 stipend was $20,427 (non-taxable). Stipends are indexed annually. Scholarships may be held for up to three years for Doctoral studies and two years for Masters by Research studies. Scholarship-holders must study full-time and maintain satisfactory progress. Applicants should hold Honours Class 1 or equivalent results.
Australian Postgraduate Award Industry (APAI)
This scholarship is available to research students whose supervisors receive ARC linkage grants for collaborative research with industry. Students are selected on merit by the researcher. The 2009 stipend was $26,669 (non-taxable). Stipends are indexed annually.
Matching scholarships
Supervisors who have access to an industry partner or strategic funds source can apply for a matching contribution from UOW to provide a scholarship in an area of research strength. Recipients must be commencing students who are Australian citizens or permanent residents undertaking a Doctorate or Masters by Research project in an area of research strength. Application
Research scholarship applications must be submitted to the Research Student Centre by October 17 (September 30 for the Faculty of Creative Arts). Late applications will not be considered.
Applications must be accompanied by two referee reports.
