The BlueScope Steel Metallurgy Centre (BSMC) was established in 2004, evolving
out of the previousBHP Institute for Steel Processing and Products, which had been
operating since 1995. The centreprovides opportunities for academic staff to play
a greater role in assisting industry in enhancing its business. It also enhances the
opportunities for industry staff to make a contribution to fundamental research
and education. It has built up specialised equipment infrastructure that is shared
by the University and company employees in a unique arrangement. The BSMC
focuses on the research in two areas:

  • Physical Metallurgy
  • Pyrometallurgy
