BlueScope Steel Metallurgy Centre (SI)

The Vision

Director:  Associate Professor Brian Monaghan

Objectives:

  • To conduct world-class strategic, basic and applied research that complements
the in-house research capacity of BlueScope Steel.
  • To provide excellent education at undergraduate and postgraduate level and to
assist the transfer of new knowledge to the workplace.

The BlueScape Steel Metallurgy Centre (BSMC) was established in 2004, evolving out of the previous BHP Institute for Steel Processing and Products, which had been operating since 1995. The centre provides opportunities for academic staff to play a greater role in assisting industry in enhancing its business. It also enhances the opportunities for industry staff to make a contribution to fundamental research and education. It has built up specialized equipment infrastructure that is shared by the University and company employees in a unique arrangement. The BSMC predominately focuses on but not limited to the research in two areas:

  • Physical Metallurgy
  • Pyrometallurgy
