- To conduct world-class strategic, basic and applied research that complements
the in-house research capacity of BlueScope Steel.
- To provide excellent education at undergraduate and postgraduate level and to
assist the transfer of new knowledge to the workplace.

The centreprovides opportunities for academic staff to play a greater role in assisting industry in enhancing its business.It also enhances the opportunities for industry staff to make a contribution to fundamental research and education. It has built up specialised equipment infrastructure that is shared by the University and company employees in a unique arrangement. The BSMC focuses on the research in two areas:
- Physical Metallurgy
- Pyrometallurgy
