In this section we will look at the impact that a nuclear power plant will have on the surrounding environment, mainly through pollution, and compare this to other forms of power production.

Initially there are a few points that need to be made when discussing the impact that nuclear power has on the environment. These are:

  • Nuclear power is not a renewable source of energy.
  • Greenhouse gases ARE produced during the production of nuclear power.
  • Pollution does not only include direct emissions into the atmosphere but also noise, destruction of ecosystem, land degradation etc.
  • Power used during the mining of ore, fuel enrichment, fuel delivery etc. must also be considered in the nuclear power pollution output.
  • Each different type of nuclear power plant will have a different level of pollution output, but all within close comparison.

After considering these points, we will look at the effects on the environment under different topics. These topics are:
