The production and disposal of nuclear fuel rods is perhaps the most contentious aspect of the nuclear power debate for the general public. The issues of uranium mining and its byproducts as well as the safe production and disposal of nuclear fuel rods is of critical importance if nuclear power generation is ever to become commonplace in the future. These pages examine the important stages of the nuclear fuel cycle, including:

  • Uranium mining and its social, economic and environmental effects,
  • The fuel rod manufacturing process, and
  • The safe disposal of spent fuel rods and other nuclear wastes.
