Welcome to ISEM

The Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials (ISEM) has built an interdisciplinary research capability on advanced materials and technology. ISEM consists of 30 academic and research staff (currently including 12 various level ARC fellows), 40 postgraduate students and more than 10 visiting staff with world-class well-equipped laboratories. The annual funding from ARC is over $3 million in the last five years. ISEM has established collaborative net work with more than 50 groups in Australia and overseas. A single research program on superconductivity in 1994 has evolved into six programs, including applied superconductivity, materials for energy applications, electronics and spintronics, thin film technology, Terahertz science and thermionics and nano-materials. ISEM has focused on two major areas: energy and electronics. Energy among many issues is ranked as the number one important problem in the next century.  The energy area research at ISEM includes batteries / supercapacitors for energy conversion and storage, thermoelectric / magnetocaloric / thermionic materials and fuel cells for energy generation, superconductors for energy transmission, storage and electrical devices. The electronic materials include spintronic, multiferroic and ferroelectric materials as well as terahertz science and devices for information technology, memory and data storage.

ISEM Objectives
• Establish a world-class interdisciplinary research team in materials technology and   manufacturing
• Promote the commercial potential of emerging materials technology to industry
• Enhance and develop strong national and international links in various fields
• Offer excellent postgraduate education and training
