Surface Engineered Materials

The Materials for the Hydrogen Economy project has identified weld zones as the "weak link" in high pressure hydrogen pipelines as a key reseatch area. Following discussions in 2005, it has been agreed that this will form the basis for research in collaboration with the Edison Welding Institute (EWI) in Ohio, and the Oak Ridge National Labs (ORNL) in Tennessee.

Discussions have also taken place with the EU-funded NaturalHy project. This is a 39 member initiative that is working to determine the feasibility of utilizing the existing natural gas infrastructure (pipeline grid), to safely transport high pressure hydrogen.

This project has also applied to CSIRO for funding to develop a technology roadmap for Australia's hydrogen distribution infrastructure.
