A message from the Head of School
Welcome to the School of Mechanical, Materials and Mechatronic Engineering. Our School is one of the top Engineering Schools in Australia with world-class research and teaching programs in a range of exciting technological areas.
Our teaching programs are designed to provide undergraduate and postgraduate students with up to date and high quality training in both the foundations of engineering science and the application of the latest techniques and practices used throughout industry. We pride ourselves on giving our students an exciting education program that is relevant to the needs of both industry and to the engineering profession, and which prepares students for a wide range of careers.
Our recent graduates are now employed in industries as diverse as
- advanced manufacturing,
- steelmaking,
- wind energy,
- government organisation eg. Australian Bureau of Meteorology,
- commercial research organizations,
- mining companies,
- automotive industries, etc.
One of the great strengths of our School is the high number of collaborative links we have with industries within our local region and also nationally and internationally. As a result we have an extremely strong track record in developing collaborative research programs with industry and in attracting competitive grant funding from governmental sources.
Our School makes a major contribution to several of the key Research Strengths within the University including the Engineering Materials Institute and the Manufacturing Research Strength.
There are many aspects to our wide range of research which generates outcomes that increase the effectiveness of Australian industry and enhance the quality of life of our community as a whole. Highlights include:
- advanced materials research which includes development of nano-scale actuators and sensors in the biomechanics and manufacturing sectors;
- research in bulk materials handling technologies (servicing many of our nation’s key industries such as mining, agriculture, power generation, etc);
- advanced manufacturing and robotics;
- steel production;
- welding systems,
- renewable energy systems;
- tribology;
- and many more.
