What is Materials Science and Engineering?

Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) is a vital part of our modern society. Put simply, MSE is all about turning raw materials into finished goods. MSE fits in between mining or chemical engineering (where the raw materials are made) and manufacturing (where final products are produced). A career in MSE means you will contribute to Australia's economic future by developing our capacity to add value to our abundant materials resources. Increasingly, MSE professionals are concerned about more environment-sensitive materials processing and conservation of energy and resources by more efficient re-use and recycling of materials.

Materials Science and Engineering is the body of knowledge and practical skills concerned with the structure, properties, production and processing of materials and their adaptation to meet society's needs. MSE professionals understand how the structure and properties of a material can be controlled by composition and processing. This knowledge is then applied to design and manufacturing, improving existing materials and processes, and developing new, technologically advanced products.
