Materials Research Projects Big Winners in ARC Grants
Materials researchers at UoW continue to be highly successful in the prestigious Australian Research Council (ARC) grants. Announced just recently were $3.5m worth of new grants in materials related projects by UoW researchers. 7 Discovery Grants and 1 Linkage Grant were recently awarded and these include 4 Fellowships. The projects cover a wide range of materials topics from superconductors to steel solidification and include many related to nanotechnology. A full list of successful grants can be obtained here.
Zoran Sterjovski's PhD thesis (completed in 2003) has reached "all star" status! His work on welding of pressure vessel steels ranks in the top 5 theses accessed through the University's digital thesis collection (see http://www-library.uow.edu.au/theses/) and has been read over 2000 times each month! Zoran's thesis is obviously very topical, but also very productive: Zoran has produced 12 publications from his thesis work. Well done to Zoran.

Bluescope human resources representatives (Phil Rouse and Steve Irving) provided their vision of the future directions for Bluescope Steel at a recent Metsoc lunchtime seminar. A bright future beckons for material engineers seeking a career in the local steel industry. Both the cadetship numbers and graduate recruiting have increased in recent years as Bluescope strengthens the depth of technical personnel at its Port Kembla steelworks. Details of cadetships can be found “here”.
