You can enrol in a course in either Autumn (February) or Spring (July) session. For a list of session dates, please refer to the following link: 2011 Session Dates.
How long does a session run for?
A session generally runs for 13 weeks, excluding a mid session recess, study recess and exams. Please refer to the 2011 Session dates link above for more information.
What is the minimum and maximum number of subjects I can study per session?
The minimum number of subjects you can study per session is 1 subject.
The maximum number of subjects you can study per session is 2 subjects.
How long will it take me to complete my degree?
If you are studying the Graduate Certificate in Rolling Stock Engineering you will need to complete 4 subjects in total. If you study 2 subjects a session (the maximum) it will take you 1 year to complete.
If you are studying the Master of Rolling Stock Engineering you will need to complete 7 subjects in total, one of which is equivalent to 2 subjects. If you study 2 subjects per session (the maximum) it will take you 2 years to complete.
You can choose to study 1 subject per session or alternate between 1 subject and 2 subjects per session, but this will increase the duration of your degree.
How many hours of study do I need to do per week?
The guideline is approximately 12 hours per subject a week. This may seem like a lot, however past students have found the workload quite manageable.
Am I able to take a break from studying my degree?
Yes, you are allowed to take a Leave of Absence for up to 12 months. For more information, please refer to the Enrolment page and click on Leave of Absence.
If I am enrolled in the Graduate Certificate program, am I able to continue on into the Masters Program?
You may be able to continue into the Masters program and graduate with the Master of Rolling Stock Engineering. However if you are enrolled in the Graduate Certificate program, you will need to seek approval from your Course Co-ordinator.
What happens if I am enrolled in the Masters program but decide not to continue with the program?
If, for some reason, you are unable to complete the full Masters program, you may be able to graduate with the Graduate Certificate in Rolling Stock Engineering (provided you complete the degree requirements).
Do I have to attend the workshops?
Yes the workshops are compulsory and feedback from students has confirmed that the workshops are an invaluable experience.
Do you run the workshops anywhere else besides Wollongong?
Currently the workshops are only offered at the Wollongong campus, however if there was sufficient demand, and alternative location could be arranged. Please contact Rachel Weine (rweine@uow.edu.au or +61 2 4221 4566) to discuss.
Who are these courses designed for, professionals with experience in the rail industry or graduates with no experience in the rail industry?
These courses are designed for anyone who has an interest or would like to pursue a career in rolling stock engineering.
Do I have to complete the subjects in a specific order?
Graduate Certificate in Rolling Stock Engineering - there is no specific order to complete these subjects, you can choose which subjects to study first.
Master of Rolling Stock Engineering - students generally complete the following 5 subjects first; ENGG924, ENGG925, ENGG926, ENGG927 and ENGG928 (in any order), and then complete ENGG929 and ENGG940.
