Then Mining Engineering is the course for you

Mining Engineers are professionals who apply science, geoscience, engineering and technology to the efficient exploration and extraction of minerals from the earth. Minerals are a major export income earner for Australia, and demand for coal, iron ore, bauxite, and petroleum will continue.

The Mining Engineering component is designed to provide students with an intellectual and professional training as well as a practical guide by means of field visits.

What do you study?

The course has a duration of four years full-time study. The early years generally consist of common core subjects such as Engineering Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Mechanics, Engineering Computing, Management of Technology and Introduction to Design and Innovation. The later years branch into more specialised areas including:

Ventilation

Rock Mechanics

Design of engineering structures

Computer applications

Environmental aspects of mining

Industrial management

Entry Requirements

Assumed knowledge:

2U - English and 2U and/or 3U Maths or equivalent

Recommended Study:

Physics, Chemistry or at least 2U Maths

Students with no previous knowledge of Physics or Chemistry are advised to enrol in bridging courses held on Campus

UAI:

80 standard entry

Students with a UAI of at least 93+ qualify for the Scholars program and students with less than 80 can apply through the Opportunity Program.

Why Study at Wollongong?

The Mining program at Wollongong prepares students for work anywhere in the world. Wollongong training prepares students to meet both the technical and operating changes facing the mining industry. Students are prepared for their career in the field of mining by solving practical problems, designing innovative mines and being aware of human relationships and mine safety. Practical hands-on experience is necessary for 12 weeks of your studies. Classroom teaching is by small group learning during tutorials and by laboratory work. Students also study various aspects of management including industrial relations, safety and professional ethics.

Our academic staff keeps close contact with the mining industry and are involved with local and international companies. Wollongong graduates occupy prominent positions in the mining industry.

The Wollongong mining engineering program offers several prizes for meritorious performance.

Career Opportunities

Mining Engineers are amongst the highest paid of the Engineering disciplines. Most engineers have a median salary range following graduation of approximately $40,000. Job prospects are with private and government companies and as a Consultant in the following areas:

Production Manager in
- underground coal mines
- surface mines
- underground metalliferous mine

Mining Investment Analyst

Mine Ventilation engineer

Petroleum Engineer
