What subjects will you do?

What is Environmental Engineering?

Are you concerned about the natural and manmade environment?

Do you want to solve problems associated with water quality, wastewater reuse and disposal, solid waste disposal, contaminated lands and air quality?

Do you want to know how to improve industrial processes to prevent pollution?

Do you like to know the importance and mechanisms of sustainability of natural and manmade resources?

If you answer yes to any one of these questions, Environmental Engineering is the degree for you.

Environmental Engineers are professionals who work to minimise the environmental impacts of engineering and other developments. Environmental engineers are involved with many aspects of society’s interaction with the environment. Environmental engineering encompasses the scientific assessment and development of engineering solutions to environmental problems impacting our biosphere, land, water and air quality and aim for sustainable development. The field embraces broad environmental concerns, including water quality and supply, groundwater protection and remediation, wastewater treatment, indoor and outdoor air pollution, solid and hazardous waste disposal, supply of safe drinking water, cleaning contaminated sites, preserving sensitive wetlands, and prevention of pollution through product and process design.

Environmental engineers must balance competing technical, social and legal issues concerning the use of environmental resources. Because of the complexity of this challenge, environmental engineers need a broad understanding not only of engineering disciplines but also of chemistry, biology, geology, economics and management.

What do you study?

This course combines traditional engineering skills with broad application of physics, chemistry, biology and other subject areas in an interdisciplinary manner to achieve innovative and environmentally acceptable solutions to existing and future environmental problems.

The course has a duration of four years full-time study. The early years generally consist of common core subjects such as Engineering Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering Computing, Management of Technology and Introduction to Design and Innovation. The later years branch into more specialised areas including:

Water quality engineering

Air and noise pollution control

Solid and hazardous waste management

Environmental Engineering Design

Site remediation
