The Faculty, founded in 1951 in response to the regions need for engineers and metallurgists to support a thriving steel making and coal mining industry, offers a unique opportunity for Australian and international students to live and study with an international Faculty.
More than 80 full time Faculty members teach into the Faculties programs and approximately 50 honorary and full-time research staff are currently on-campus conducting research. As many as 25 countries are represented in the student body with students and staff currently from the People’s Republic of China, India, France, Germany, Nepal and Latin America among others.
The Faculty of Engineering offers coursework programs and research across four schools: Civil, Mining and Environmental Engineering (CME) Engineering Physics Mechanical, Materials and Mechatronic Engineering (MMM) School of Electrical, Computer and Telecommunication Engineering (SECTE)
The Faculty enjoys an established international reputation for research and teaching excellence in areas such as bulk materials handling; environmental engineering; Geomechanics; intelligent polymers; manufacturing and Mechatronics; railway engineering; solid state physics and medical radiation physics; steel processing and products; and superconducting and electronic materials.
The Group of Eight Deans of Engineering (Go8) and Associates represent the ten most research intensive engineering faculties in Australia. The Group is comprised of the eight engineering faculties and schools of the Go8 universities plus the associates and the engineering faculties of the Universities of Wollongong and one other. These faculties (UOW’s Faculty of Engineering) were invited to join in recognition of the outstanding quality of their engineering research, teaching and scholarship”.
