2006 International Conference
5th International Conference on Educational Leadership
"Distributive Leadership"
University of Wollongong
16 – 17
February 2006
Around 300 delegates attended the Centre’s Fifth Annual International
Conference on Educational Leadership held on 16 and 17 February 2006 at the
Wollongong Campus of the University of Wollongong. The Conference, co-sponsored
by the NSW Department of Education and Training, the Catholic Diocese of Wollongong,
Australian College of Educators (NSW), Australian Council of Educational Leaders,
and the University of Wollongong Faculty of Education, drew rich praise for
the Conference program and management and the high quality of keynote presentations
and workshops. The Conference was officially opened by Professor John Patterson,
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Operations), University of Wollongong.
The theme of the Conference centered on the need for collaboration, team building
and collegiality and genuine empowerment of people working in rapidly changing,
turbulent, diverse and complex organizational environments. The values underpinning
the theme of distributive leadership are consistent with recent movements in
education such as Teacher Leadership, Parallel Leadership, Shared Leadership,
Authentic Leadership and the Learning Community.
The keynote speakers included Professor Bill Mulford (University of Tasmania),
Professor Patrick Duignan (Australian Catholic University), Cheryl O’Connor
(CEO Australian College of Educators), Professor Stephen Dinham (University
of Wollongong) and Ms Christine Nixon APM (Chief Commissioner, Victoria Police).
Assoc. Professor Neil Cranston (University of Queensland) was the After Dinner
Speaker.
Integral to the Conference were a series of workshops led by eminent and emerging
educational leaders and practitioners, which included Ann McIntyre (NSW Department
of Education and Training), Dr Michael Bezzina (Director RE and Education Services,
CEO Parramatta), Howard Youngs (Unitec Institute of Technology, Auckland),
Allan Morgan (Educational consultant in leadership and organizational renewal,
Queensland), Steve Money (Jakarta International School), and Dr Lenore Armour
(CEDIR, University of Wollongong).
The most enthralling feature of the Conference program was musical recitals
by students from the Illawarra Grammar School (TIGS), Kiama High School Vocal
Group, and the Regional Talent Development Program.
