Advanced Standing in Postgraduate programs

Advanced standing in a postgraduate degree may be granted for any tertiary study done that is over and above the entry requirements for the degree. Download the  advanced standing guidelines, and list of awards currently approved for advanced standing here for more detailed information.

GETTING STARTED IN AN ON-LINE SUBJECT

Locating your subject materials:

On-line subjects in the Faculty of Education's postgraduate program are delivered through the Janison Learning Management System. The one exception is EDGS914 which is run through the UOW E-Learning system, accessed through SOLS.

The Janison website contains the Subject Outline, readings and other resources for study in the subject, and any on-line discussion forums or other teaching and learning activities.

A SOLS message from the subject co-ordinator will be sent to all enrolled students at the beginning of each session welcoming new students and explaining how each subject will run. Students enrolling into a subject after teaching has started should contact the subject co-ordinator to make sure they are have all this information.

It is important that all students access SOLS at least weekly to maintain their password and monitor all UOW messages. Students should also use their UOW email account for any correspondence related to their study.

ACCESSING JANISON

Janison is accessed from the Faculty of Education home page (http://www.uow.edu.au/educ/index.html) , under "Links" at the bottom of the homepage. You can bookmark this page-http://www.uow.edu.au/educ/janison/index.html

The Janison Logon Page also has links to a Guide to Accessing Janison and FAQ information which can be downloaded for easy reference.

Students sign in using their UOW username and password, ie the same user id information used to access all UOW resources such as the Library, sols, or UOW webmail.

OTHER FAQs ABOUT DISTANCE STUDY

1. Will I be sent textbooks and other materials?

There are no hardcopy materials sent out for subjects run on-line in Autumn or Spring sessions.

Most postgraduate subjects use readings from journals and other resources, which are available through the Library E-Readings link or available through Janison.

Any required texts can be purchased on line through the Unishop. (http://unishop.uow.edu.au/)

Some materials may be sent out for the distance TESOL program, run in the distance TESOL intakes (February, May, August and November)

Students enrolled in the distance TESOL program should look at the information on the TESOL postgraduate pages for the details of the distance TESOL program. (http://www.uow.edu.au/educ/postgrad/UOW037372.html)

2. How will I know when to start?

Students in flexible delivery and online subjects start and finish their study in line with the standard University teaching Sessions (Autumn and Spring). Distance students must still observe the normal administrative deadlines. These include the dates that teaching starts, the last dates to enrol in a subject and to withdraw from a subject.

Details of these can be found on the Session and Key Dates link on the Current Students webpage-http://www.uow.edu.au/student/index.html

Messages from Subject Co-ordinators will also be sent to students enrolled in each subject through SOLS.

3. Who can I contact for help?

Problems accessing your subject ?

1. Check you have a current UOW userid and active password by trying to sign into SOLS,

2. Check you are enrolled in the correct subject, and subject instance.(ie correct session, and flexible or distance delivery)

3. If this is correct and you still have problems, contact the Janison support team:

Email: janison_support@uow.edu.au

3. If you have a problem with your UOW user id or password, you will need to contact the University's ITS.

There is a specific team that will look after distance students, and they will be able to respond quickly for you.

The contact email is: dsu@uow.edu.au, or phone (61-2-) 4221 4169

You need to provide the following information to confirm your identity as a student:

-Full Name

-Student Number

-Course

-UOW user name

-Bar code on student card, or address as it shows on the UOW system

-Any additional information that can confirm your identity, eg phone number as it shows on the UOW system, but preferably NOT your date of birth!

-A description of the problem. If it is a password problem, the new password will be sent to you by email, but will be indirect, as information that only you should know- eg set as "your date of birth"
