Degree Structure
UOW coursework programs present the latest findings and contemporary practices from around the globe. The programs are designed to help you to make a real impact on your working environment. You will develop a practical and relevant skills base, critical in today’s education market.
Coursework programs have all of their requirements met by the completion of coursework subjects in a particular discipline or professional area. Normally, a full-time student undertakes subjects which amount to 48 credit points per year. Each subject is allocated a credit point value. You will normally undertake semester-long sessional subjects. As a guide, the work load for a 6 credit point single subject in a postgraduate coursework program is an average of twelve hours per week.
This is a recommended work load for postgraduates and may vary depending on your academic ability and previous knowledge of the subject. Assessments may be based on a combination of class participation, written work and practical tasks.
(More specific information about how these degrees are offered within the Faculty can be found within the specialisations section.)
Intending students should check the formal course descriptions in the University Handbook for more detailed information about each program of study.
Graduate Certificate
(24cp, 1 semester = 6 months full-time or part-time equivalent)
This award is normally taken by students who wish to take a new educational direction from their Bachelor degree; or, for those who do not have a degree but do have substantial relevant employment experience. Completion of the Graduate Certificate may lead to entry into a Graduate Diploma or a Masters degree.
Graduate Diploma
(48cp, 2 semesters = 1 year full-time or part-time equivalent)
This award is for students seeking to take a different educational direction from their undergraduate degree. Completion of the Graduate Diploma may lead to entry into a Masters.
Master of Education
(48cp, 2 semesters, full time = 1 year or part-time equivalent)
This award is for students who wish to expand their knowledge in a specialised area of their chosen discipline. Entry into the Masters program requires a 4 year teaching qualification or equivalent. Every Masters student choses one area of specialisation within their program, but can also include elective subjects from other areas if they wish.
