The UoW program has a reputation for being a student-friendly, flexible
program which is responsive to student feedback and needs.
The UoW program has a well-considered balance of theory and practice. It
constantly challenges itself to make theory accessible and relevant and to
make practice well-grounded in theory and research.
The program is offered in both on-campus and distance modes.
Program entry is flexible with Spring and Autumn intakes to the on-campus
programs and four intakes per year to the distance programs.
Students can take an overseas practicum (eg in China, Malaysia, Fiji)
There is good subject choice.
On campus and online classes are interactive; students come from a range
of backgrounds both local and international with the result
that participants encounter a truly global perspectives on English language
teaching.
Programs articulate providing a pathway for students from Graduate Certificate
right through to Doctoral study.
It has a high reputation with employers.
Students have access to an excellent selection of on-campus and online
library resources, including leading TESOL journals, academic books, e-readings
and other resources.
TESOL staff members have expertise and experience in a range of areas (primary,
secondary, adult migrant and tertiary preparation, ESL and EFL). There is
a mixture of linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
They have a reputation for effective teaching and taking an interest in
students academic and progress and personal welfare.
The team has a high level of involvement with practising English teachers
both in Australia (eg through professional development programs) and overseas
(eg through overseas practicum and through immersion programs in Wollongong
for overseas teachers of English).
The Faculty runs a number of seminar series and conferences that are of
interest to postgraduate students.
The Language Education team are the recipients of a number of national
competitive grants and tenders for their research into language development,
classroom practice and policy.
Members of the team are regularly invited as plenary and keynote speakers
at national and international conferences.
Several of the postgraduate participants hold academic positions and are
studying in the Wollongong program to gain further expertise and take on
leadership roles.
A number of students choose to continue on to research degrees, finding
their postgraduate coursework stimulating and fulfilling. The TESOL doctoral
program is the best subscribed in the Faculty with some 25 local and international
students.
