MASTER OF EDUCATION (TESOL)
The Master of Education (TESOL) is a higher degree for both professional educators
and for those who are interested in pursuing a research program beyond this
degree. It is designed for those with teacher qualifications and experience,
particularly in the ESL/ EFL field.
The Master of Education introduces participants to contemporary trends and
issues in research, theory and practice. It provides students with an in-depth
understanding of areas such as second language development, discourse analysis,
pedagogical grammars, research methods, language assessment, English for specific
purposes, and computer assisted language learning.
Students wishing to continue on to research degrees (Masters by Research,
Doctor of Education or Doctor of Philosophy) can undertake preliminary research
into an area of interest during their Masters program.
The Master of Education in TESOL requires 48 credit points two semesters
if studying full time.
This course is offered both on campus and through distance education (delivered
primarily online for students who would otherwise not be able to undertake
a postgraduate course at the University).

ensure that the subjects in the MEd program are theoretically sound and at the

The MEd (TESOL) is designed for those who want to pursue specialist areas and
to understand the theoretical basis of TESOL practice in further detail. The
MEd (TESOL) is a recognised specialist teaching qualification for qualified
teachers. The course consists of a total of 48 credit points, completed in
line with the MEd requirements. It can be completed in one year full-time or
up to three years part-time.

- EDGT983 Assessment in TESOL
- EDGT984 Theories of Second Language Learning (core subject)
- EDGT985 English in Specific Contexts
In addition you must also study:
- EDGZ921 Introduction to Research and Enquiry (best taken later in degree)

Entry Requirements
It is assumed that students will have a four-year undergraduate degree which
includes a formal teaching qualification. Special consideration may be
given to students who have substantial experience in the field. Students from
a Non-English speaking background must also meet English language requirements.
