The Faculty of Education holds induction programs for new research students at least once a year. Since research students begin their work at different times during their year, however, it is the responsibility of supervisors to discuss the student's and supervisors' rights and responsibilities as detailed in the Code of Practice: Supervision. At the beginning of enrolment supervisors should also acquaint students of the Resources and Facilities provided by the Faculty and the specific expectations of enrolment in a research degree in Education.
Faculty Funding for Research Students
The Faculty of Education provides support for students undertaking postgraduate research degrees and is a means of supplementing the costs incurred by research students in pursuing their research projects.
MEd (Research) students up to $800
EdD and PhD students up to $1 500
Eligible expenditure items are:
| Access to specialist support; transcription, data entry, editing, statistical support | |
| Access to specialist facilities and equipment as required for their research project (eg. laboratory, studio) | |
| Access to project related consumables: data storing devices, photocopying, videotapes, printing, postage (for research related matters only) and publication costs. (NB: only consumables associated with students projects and not day-to-day stationery supplies) | |
| Access to specialist software packages (eg. data analysis packages) and relevant training programs | |
| Library services including interlibrary loans and document delivery | |
| Fieldwork expenses related to the research project including travel, accommodation and telephone charges etc. |
Approval from the Research Officer must be sought before purchasing equipment items. Claims need to be supported by an original tax invoice and/or receipt and should be given to the Research Officer for authorisation.
Conference funding
The faculty makes funds available to support students presenting their work at conferences. Download an application form and guidelines here.
Conference funding is also available from other institutions, for example AARE (Australian Association for Research in Education), NSW IER (NSW Institute for Education Research) and HERDSA (Higher Education Research & Development Society of Australia).
Scholarships
Current postgraduate research student scholarships
Completion Scholarships
Faculty of Education funding is available to encourage research students to complete within time limits. These scholarships are available to students nearing completion to work full-time (between 4 and 6 months) with their supervisors to complete their thesis. Interested students should discuss this with their supervisor and the Associate Dean, Research & Graduate.
