Graduate Certificate in Physical and Health Education

The Graduate Certificate in Physical and Health Education is a short postgraduate certificate program, designed to assist students who do not meet the NSW Institute of Teachers requirements for teaching Personal Development, Health, Physical Education. It is NOT a complete teaching qualification in itself, only providing additional subject background that may be required for students wishing to teach PDHPE in NSW schools. Students must already have completed an appropriate undergraduate degree for the area, as assessed by the Faculty of Education in line with the NSWIT requirements.

For more detail regarding these requirements refer to the NSWIT documents that can be found at  http://www.nswteachers.nsw.edu.au/Subject-content-requirements-abridged.html .

Further information about meeting DET requirements for teaching can be found under the GDipEd information on the Faculty of Education website. (http://www.uow.edu.au/educ/courses/graddiped)

The complete course description, with the subject descriptions linked to it, can be found in the 2008 Course Handbook, on the UOW site at: http://www.uow.edu.au/handbook/yr2008/pg/index.html

The Program

The complete course consists of four subjects, two in Physical Activity and two in Health, run as intensive workshops on the UOW campus during January. Candidates complete as much of the program as they need to meet the DET requirements. It may not necessary to complete the whole GCert program to meet DET requirements.

The 2008 program will be running as intensive week-long workshops in January, with assessment tasks to complete following on from each subject. Final results for each subject will be due early April.
Students intending to continue into the GDipEd will be able to enrol provisionally, and start the GDipEd before the GCert results are declared.

The GCert will only be running once a year, in the January session.

The 2009 program is:

  • Week 1 start 5 January EDGP901 Adolescent Health 1 (Mental Health issues)
  • Week 2 start 12 January EDGP904 Physical Activity 2 (Dance, gymnastics)
  • Week 3 start 19 January EDGP902 Adolescent Health 2 (Risk taking behaviours)
  • Week 4 start 27 January EDGP903 Physical Activity 1 (Games-Aquatic, field)

Fees

The 2008 fees for the GCert PE/Hlth are $170.00 per credit point, and you pay for the number of credit points you are enrolled in. Each subject is 6cp. Students may be eligible for Commonwealth assistance through FEE-HELP. (see UOW website for more information- http://www.uow.edu.au/student/centre/reforms/help.html )
