Degree Structure
This degree can be completed by four (4) years of full-time study OR part-time equivalent.
Patterns of Study
The Faculty of Education offers two sessions of study a year and normally full-time students can study up to four (4) subjects in each session. Also, a very limited number of subjects can be studied in summer session. A progression grid can be found here.
Professional Experience
A critical component of the Primary Education degree is the provision of professional opportunities in settings where preservice teachers experience "real situations" that allow them to build connections to the profession of teaching. Throughout the course of the degree various subjects will require students to undertake short term placements in school and community settings. These experiences are designed to strengthen the links between theory and practice.
In their first year students will experience 10 school immersion days followed by two weeks of Professional Experience. In second year students will have a three week Professional Experience block. In third year students will be required to complete a four week Professional Experience block. In their final year students will complete a five week Internship.
Students also have the option of participating in an overseas Professional Experience in China, Fiji, Malaysia or Thailand.
Honours
Entry into the Bachelor of Primary Education (Honours) program is by application and based on academic merit. Students admitted to the Honours program will be expected to study over two sessions for a total of 48 credit points. The program requires the completion of a 24 credit point thesis. The grade of Honours awarded will be determined by the calculation of a weighted average of merit points achieved at the first attempt in the 400-level subjects only using the formula listed in the University Course Rules. The Class of Honours will be based upon the weighted average mark achieved according to the following scale:
- Class 1: 85-100% of merit points
- Class 11: Division 1: 75 - 84% of merit points
- Class 11: Division 2: 65 - 74% of merit points
Students who enter the Honours program and fail to achieve the appropriate level of merit points may be eligible for a Bachelor of Education Pass degree.
Dean's Scholars
The Dean's Scholar degrees provide an enriched educational experience for high achieving students who are interested in pursuing a career in the field of education.
Students enrolled in the Dean's Scholar degrees will satisfy the same requirements for their respective courses but will be allocated an academic mentor and engage in enriched assessment tasks in specified subjects.
Students will benefit from:
- Extended library privileges
- Designated study space
- $500 textbook allowance per year (pro rata for part-time)
- Opportunities to attend Faculty workshops and seminars
- End of year lunch and other relevant activities with the Dean and Mentors
