The watercolour "Deya to the Coast" is one of the two non-sculptural pieces by Flugelman in the collection. Although Flugelman was trained as a painter it is predominantly for his sculptural work that he is known.

"Deya to the Coast" reflects Flugelman's traditional skills which he was taught at East Sydney Technical College immediately after the Second World War. At this time there was a disciplined approach that was based on academic skills such as drawing, in fact drawing and the ability to render the world realistically was the discipline that underlined the course. This is also evident in works such as "Portrait of Ken McKinnon" by Guy Warren who also trained at the same institution.

Deya is in Majorca, Spain, an area with a long tradition and links to artistic visitors from Australia.
