University of Wollongong Journalism Society

For those interested in journalism and the media

Aims and Objectives of the Society

What we hope to achieve

• To encourage social and professional networking between members
• To facilitate networking with outside media organisations and professionals
• To organise educational and vocational developments and experiences within the journalism field
• To provide a collective voice for journalism students and/or society members

Why we have established a Society

The society, which was established in Autumn Session 2006 by ten, third year students aims to foster relationships amongst students and industry partners.

To date – the University of Wollongong has not had a journalism club or society that specifically addresses the needs of journalism students. The University of Wollongong’s Journalism Society is a student body that hopes to hear students concerns and, with the help of the University, hopes to address these issues.

One of the main issues raised by our membership is that journalism education can exist in a very theoretical vacuum. Students would like more opportunities to meet with working journalists or even to see the inside of a newsroom. They would like to know who they can contact to get their work published, or even how they can use the internet and independent media networks to publish themselves.

Ultimately, they want to know how they can make use of what they learnt in the classroom. This is where the society can help, by fostering partnerships with local media organisations and organising informative events and workshops for students.

The society is working towards creating further opportunities for development and socialisation at the University. This year’s main agenda is to establish strong communication links between students and key persons within the industry.

In our first few weeks of operation we signed up over 120 journalism students.
