An exhibition of new works by Visual Arts and Graphic Design Students:

Julia Gove, Alicia Sciberras, Nicci Bedson, Kyla Parkinson, Jayne Fischer, Lauren McCartney, Kiara Mucci, Brenna Quinlan and Lorraine Dowler

Showcasing the works of nine visual arts and graphic design students, the Cover Exhibition invites the public to take a rare look at the creative expressions of some of Wollongong’s most promising student artists. The exhibition is an initiative undertaken by a group of female creative art students from the Faculty of Creative Arts, University of Wollongong. It offers the girls, most of whom are in their final year of study, a unique opportunity to gain experience in planning, curating, and executing their own exhibition from start to finish.

The theme Cover has ties with femininity – it evokes images of warmth, safety, and homeliness, and alludes to the predominately feminine world of textile arts. It can also be taken to mean shelter, protection, or concealment.

About the artists…

Each artist has interpreted the theme in her own way, leading to an intriguing display of the diversity and creativity present within the Creative Arts Faculty. Despite living in the same geographical area, and undertaking similar tertiary courses for the past two years, each student has developed an individual style, entirely independent of those around her.

In Kyla Parkinson’s mixed media artworks, her subjects’ eyes are covered, which invokes the question - are they trying to keep the harsh world out, or are they merely appreciating the world within?

Nicci Bedson’s portraits of her most intimate friends are painted onto pillow covers, alluding to sexuality, privacy, and the escapism of sleep.

Julia Gove has made casts of varying objects – the cast being an impression made by covering an item in a different substance. They blur the boundaries between an object and its reproduction.

Brenna Quinlan’s oil paintings depict people that have covered their skin with tattoos. These explore issue such as youth culture, rebellion, and individuality versus conformity.

Lauren McCartney has literally covered her canvasses with thick, tactile paint, which has a captivating sensuality about it.

Jayne Fischer’s paintings explore the relationship of the figure to the environment – each has a heavy influence on the other.

Kiara Mucci’s mixed media works represent the image that remains after an object has been covered – the ‘implied’ image.

Alicia Sciberras’ works allude to the pivotal decision all people must make, when they leave the safety of their parents’ house, in favour of an independent existence.

And Lorraine Dowler’s caricatures show the anxiety, restlessness and apprehension brought about by deadlines and commitments.

The exhibition will be opened by open with a reception Thursday the 23rd of April at 12:30pm in the Long Gallery, Faculty of Creative Arts, UOW. Light refreshments will be available and all are welcome to attend.
