Artist Statement: Janelle Humphreys
Shadow of a Shadow explores several links between mathematics and painting. One of these is the connection between the Möbius strip and dimensionality, in particular the fourth dimension of space.
Time is often seen as the fourth dimension in addition to three dimensions of solid objects. Traditional two-dimensional paintings may have a third dimension of space created by perspective. My paintings, representing images changing with time, are deliberately painted with no allusion to perspectival depth. Thin glazes of paint ensure there is no vertical depth either. In these paintings there are two dimensions of space while the third dimension is time.
The mathematical interpretation spanning zero to four dimensions is only one of several threads connecting these artworks. Another idea weaving through the exhibition is the representation of nuances of binaries including darkness and light, absence and presence, organic and inorganic and evolve and stagnate. These nuances can be modelled on the surface of a Möbius strip which continuously changes from concave to convex.
Finally, the works are also connected by a process involving an interplay between choice and chance: Choice in the system of rules and the sequence across the canvas and chance in the accidental effects occurring in the images.
