ENCOUNTERS IN VANUATU

7-17 October 2008

A collaborative project involving
Ni-Vanuatu artists Eric and Linda Natuoivi
Australian/French artist Catherine K.

The Faculty of Creative Arts is proud to present a new exhibition in the Long Gallery - Encounters in Vanuatu. This project provides a space for cross-cultural conversations presenting objects with ambivalence between tradition and contemporary art. It links traditional with cultural innovation, suggests a focal point of interaction for the artists, reflects the artists’ personal ideas and converses with the culture of the islands of Vanuatu.

The exhibition is curated by Faculty of Creative Arts, Master of Creative Arts- Research (Visual Arts) candidate, Catherine K.

ARTISTS Eric and Linda Natuoivi will be artists in residence with the Faculty of Creative Arts, University of Wollongong from 7-17 October 2008.

About the artists…

Eric Natuoivi is a ceramic artist who works on the issue of gender equity and traditions of Vanuatu as kastom. He incorporates in his sculptural artforms, wood and pig tusks as symbols of value and family. Eric also works as a printmaker developing wood block images, as symbols of identity in Vanuatu.

Linda Natuoivi is a basket maker from the south island of Futuna Vanuatu. Linda creates basketry in the traditional format of her island of origin. She challenges the notion of tradition by developing new designs while working with traditional pandanus material. The making of her baskets will be recorded in video format to demonstrate the importance of this social activity and as evidence of her identity.

Catherine K., an Australian-French artist who uses mixed media, works on a reflexive approach for sharing the subject of material culture.
