Through Chinese Lense: Living in Wollongong

2 - 22 June 2006

Opened East Wing of Gallery on Friday, 2 June @ 12.30pm

This photographic exhibition analyses the city of Wollongong's cultural features. Yuan Fu investigates beach culture, the multi-cultural and multi-religious atmosphere and the harmonised industrial and living environment of Wollongong through the Lens of a Chinese Camera.

Artists Statement:
Due to the geographical distance and historical reasons the Chinese people have had little chance to know Australia from a cultural perspective. Photography from the cultural angle of a typical Australian city - the city of Wollongong, will be a compelling subject for the Chinese reader. It not only provides a unique landscape in Australia, but more importantly it is a good platform of cultural communication for Chinese readers to comprehend the rarely exposed exotic cultural experience of Wollongong through the eye of a Chinese resident.

Photography grasps the object of the gaze. Cameras point at culture everywhere, capturing everything and anything. The combination of different cultural experiences are represented and interpreted within the small frame of the photograph.

My works will analyse the cultural features of the city of Wollongong by investigating three aspects which are; beach culture, the multi-cultural and multi-religious atmosphere, and the overlapping industrial and living environment. These aspects are the subjective direction in my works. They reflect my life experience in the City of Wollongong and Australia and also take into account the viewpoint of a Chinese perspective.
