After recently touring Pakistan, this exhibition from School of Art and Design graduates is opening in Australia. The works explore a range of mediums including drawings on paper, textiles and installation.
The five artists met in 2000 while studying at the University of Wollongong. One of the students, Atiya Hasan was on exchange at the time, and when she had completed her degree, she returned to Islamabad, Pakistan. Atiya initiated the project by approaching Nomad Gallery, which embraced the collaborative project. Fading lines was also supported by the Australian High Commission in Pakistan.
One of the exhibitions featured artists, Virginia Mawer, says: Its a show about distance, memory, travel and perception. Theres a recurring examination of place, and enquiry into the dichotomy between places lived and travelled, between home and what was home. Landscape elements, both urban and natural, are often used as signifiers of this exploration of place.
Fading lines carries a theme where lines are drawn and sewn, lines are woven to fill a space, lines between objects cut and lines play with the idea of space.
