Red Hand in WollongongLong Gallery, Faculty of Creative Arts, Bldng 25 19th July - 6th August 2004 Opening 22nd July @ 12.30 An exhibition of Red Hand Print Studio work will be held at the University of Wollongong Long Gallery from the 19th July - 6th August. The exhibition will include a series of posters printed by Red Hand over a 6 year period from 1997 that have been donated to the University of Wollongong Art Collection by Franck Gohier. These posters topics range from the social to the political and have been commissioned and produced in conjunction with many government and public organisations. (A collection of the posters are also in the collection of the National Gallery of Australia. ) Gohier, who established Red Hand Print Studio with fellow printmaker Shaun Poustie in 1997, is also recognised as one of Australias leading printmakers in the field of indigenous fine art printmaking and since the early 90s has worked with many Indigenous artists and communities in the top end. The exhibition will also include a number of indigenous prints from the University of Wollongong Art Collection printed by Red Hand Print Studio and a selection of Gohiers own prints. Gohier was recently listed by Australian Art Collector as one of 20 artists to watch whose work could still be acquired for under $3000.00. (Franck Gohier is represented by Karen Brown Gallery Darwin) Gohier will be undertaking a residency at the University of Wollongong Faculty of Creative Arts from 12 - 23rd July 2004. His residency will include a workshop with 5 indigenous artist from the Illawarra from the 12th -16th July. This workshop is of much significance as this is one of the first instances were a master printer has worked exclusively with Illawarra indigenous artists.
The exhibition will be opened by Tania Daniels, Community Cultural Development Worker, Wollongong City Council, on the 22nd July 2004 at 12.30 p.m. Franck Gohiers residency is made possible by the University of Wollongong Faculty of Creative Arts and the University of Wollongong Art Collection. The local indigenous arts workshops are funded through a Small Grant from Cultural Services, Wollongong City Council.
