About the works The painting in this exhibition are based solely on the artists local environment within the Illawarra region. All the work is two-dimensional using tone as the principal structure in the art making process. Although the work is regional in its character and subject matter, it has been the artists intention to attempt to express and explore a variety of issues that go beyond localised context. The human presence in relation to nature is the most common thread in the artworks and often concerns the increasingly dangerous interference or conflict with nature. Environmental destruction and urban developments are of particular concern especially in relation to events at Sandon Point.
The artist paints on location which provides an opportunity to observe the landscape and at the same time experience the physicality of the location. By working tonally the artist has attempted to reduce the subject matter to its most basic formal structure in order to place emphasis on the atmospheric rather than just the physical aspects of the environment.
The event of day light diminishing into night has emerged as a re-occurring theme in the artists works. He sees this phenomenon as being what illuminates so dramatically our existence and awareness of place.
