VISA101: Drawing

Go to Gallery Archive

30 March - April 2007

First Year Visual Arts students display their VISA101 drawings in the Blutac Gallery.

Word from Lisa Anderson, VISA101 Lecturer...
These drawings by the VISA 101 Drawing students explore the self portrait. The project begins with small drawings using grid patterns, mirrors and simple graphite materials. The later stages of the exercise explore a variety of media and scale. Students are asked to use materials that they scavenge, such as sticks and bits of rubbish to create patterns and marks within the drawing structure.

During discussion of the final works, after each student has addressed there work to the group a final question is asked.
"Find one or two of the drawings and consider the self-portrait nature of the work. Then imagine the subject as a five year old. It is often said that our basic characters are formed by five years old, thus to imagine from a self-portrait such an age is to interpret imaginatively what can be portrayed in an image of the self."
Try this for yourself! Enjoy.
