Artist Statement…
The notion of an archaeology infused with patterns and relationships is highly significant to my thesis. Archaeological sites such as Paphos Theatre in Cyprus are palimpsests of human culture that allude to historical and contemporary pasts extending well beyond the site boundaries. Like the contemporary archaeologist, the digital photographer can capture evidence of such pasts in the material remains of site, to shape a map of connections, a new way of perceiving site.
Digital photographic processes and digital imaging strategies are both systematic and fluid; structured yet open to play and improvisation, multiple variations and mutations. Embedded in the structure of the digital photograph is an array of pixels, which, like the archaeological grid on an ancient site, contains a labyrinth of information that can be endlessly reconstructed and reconfigured. The digital photographic mapping of Paphos Theatre creates a contextual layer of visual information, a topology that points to the multiplicity of meaning inherent in material culture and found objects, and consequently the landscapes that contain them.
Admission is free to all galleries at the Faculty of Creative Arts.
