Artist Statement: Jennifer Stockins

“The Octopus and the Woman explores the unfolding of female erotic narratives in Japanese Edo (1603-1867) woodblock prints, contemporary Anime (Japanese animated films) and Manga (Japanese comic books) through contemporary installation art practice. This installation includes traditional and contemporary aspects of Japanese culture as a means of highlighting the complex cross-cultural relationship that exists between Japan and Australian fans. In order to highlight this point Hokusai’s woodblock print The Fisherman’s Wife’s Dream has been utilised to represent the protean nature of the narrative that exists between the two cultures. The use of textiles, the octopus and the female figure is essential to allow the viewers to construct their own version of the narrative.”
