Kimberley Ink and Ochre
Waringarri Aboriginal Arts
1 – 17 October 2008
The Faculty of Creative Arts are proud to present an exhibition of Waringarri Aboriginal Arts from the east Kimberley Region of Western Australia.
Curated by Catherine Carr, PhD Candidate, Faculty of Creative Arts, the exhibition features Waringarri ochre paintings which present a powerful contemporary aesthetic, interpreting the grandeur of the Kimberley Region.
Painting only in natural ochre pigments as a commitment to traditional cultural practice, Waringarri artists relate images of country, contemporary events, traditional stories and stories of station life. They comment on the importance of maintaining traditional links to land and culture while exploring a celebration of colour, composition and individualism.
Waringarri artists have been acknowledged as “exceptional colourists… (working) …within the boundaries of traditional natural materials”. “The artists who have emerged from the Kimberley region in recent years…are generating extraordinary artistic energy…” Bruce Maclean QAG 2007
This exhibition also includes The Waringarri Suite which is a deluxe set of hand printed etchings combining the finest examples from Waringarri’s senior and emerging artists. The suite consists of 13 etchings by 13 artists. Each image is 25 x 25cm and limited editions of the collection are available for purchase (presented in a hand crafted, silk lined box).
The exhibition will be opened on Thursday 2 October at 12.30pm by Professor Kathleen Clapham, Director of the University of Wollongong, Woolyungah Indigenous Centre with Welcome to Country by Barbara Nicholson. All are welcome to attend.
Artists Daisy Bitting and Judy Mengil will be visiting the University of Wollongong with the Waringarri Aboriginal Arts Centre Manager, Cathy Cummins for the opening reception.
