Sketches

An exhibition of paintings by Janelle Humphreys
19 May - 6 June 2008
Opening Thursday 22 May 12. 30 pm

Artist’s statement

During my research into the fourth dimension of space a common question I am asked is: “Isn’t the fourth dimension time?” Responding to this, I have painted spontaneously and flatly, with no deliberate illusion of depth. Paint is spread like icing on a cake in thick buttery strokes, thin glazes or piped lines. Each painting is projected from a quick sketch of a rapidly changing scene. Time is thus compressed within each image or through moving from one image to the next in a series. There are two dimensions of space and the third dimension is time.
