Dialogue in Diversity

18 March – 4 April 2008

Annette Tzavaras
Research Masters candidate, Faculty of Creative Arts

In conjunction with the University of Wollongong’s Diversity Week, the Faculty of Creative Arts is proud to present Dialogue in Diversity, an exhibition by Research Masters candidate, artist Annette Tzavaras.

With an exhibition that projects tranquillity and harmony, the artist explores themes from Islamic culture and its relation to art in Australia. Her creative work investigates the negative or in-between spaces that lead to knowledge about other artists and cultures.

“The fundamental and distinctive elements of Islamic pattern in my paintings are based on my own experience and collaboration within a culturally blended family”, says Annette. “My work contemplates the human aspects and responsibilities within the cross-cultural spectrum. I hope to strengthen the interaction between the Christian and Muslim interface in Australian contemporary society.”

In 2007 Annette worked with different artists from diverse cultural backgrounds to present an exhibition titled ‘Transforming Perceptions Via…’. The exhibition was on display at both the Wollongong and Dubai campuses of the University of Wollongong and featured Islamic elements as well as influences from Greece and Turkey.

Dialogue in Diversity will be opened by the Federal Member for Throsby, Ms Jennie George, following the launch of Diversity Week on Monday 31 March 2008.
