Master of Creative Arts student, Gerardo Guevara presents a variety of aquatint etchings and watercolour etchings exploring his Salvadorian heritage in contrast to his Australian way of life.
From the Artist: As I take a look at my surroundings, I see the beauty of colour transpired through the late afternoon glow of the sun shining reflecting from everything that it touches. As time passes everything starts to unravel like a jigsaw puzzle. I am a statistic of gender, age, and race. I am a product of war
My art development explores the boundaries of my Salvadoran childhood memories in contrast to my first ones in Australia. Each composition is reconstructed from my personal recollections between 1980 and 1990 - from memory triggered through trauma, aided by research of written documentation and photography about the Salvadoran war. Colour versus black and white prints explore the positive and negative aspects about the reality of my direct involvement in the war, where in most cases the sense of danger was a non-factor. The coloured prints represent the surreal beauty of my childhood. On the other hand the same compositions in black and white capture the harsh reality and the strain created through trauma in our family. I am now aware of this reality through assimilating to a new environment where violence, poverty and death are uncommon.
