Ice Time

22 - 26 August
Artist: Brogan Bunt

A collage-style portrait of instances in Antarctic time.  This work is based upon material recorded during a recent trip to the Ross Sea region of Antarctica.

My work tends to link together discrete media elements to produce holistic portraits of places and events. Elements of experience are sampled and cut up into pieces before then being reassembled into something resembling a navigable whole. My concern here is to pursue abstraction, division and discontinuity more directly; specifically, to portray time in a cut-up state.  Duration is undermined and reimagined as a combinatory array.  The aim is not only to unsettle illusory technologies of temporal integrity, but also to suggest a fragile space of temporal appearance.

This work began with the creation of custom software that enables the playback of large sets of still images as video.

Cropper is a simple utility for cutting up sets of stills into rows and columns.

Propper is a tool for coordinating and managing the playback of stills and audio.

Gridder is a playback engine for the display of works.  It enables realtime interactive control of playback parameters.
