Trumpets and Raspberries

Tuesday 13 – Saturday 17 October

Written by Dario Fo
Directed by Janys Hayes
A production by 2nd year performance students

A case of mistaken identities, a crazed German plastic surgeon, a squabbling wife and mistress, and two fascist law enforcers, Dario Fo's Trumpets and Raspberries written in 1981, takes the shape of a classic European farce, however, Dario Fo's intentions are not only comic.

Set in Turin in the early 1980s Trumpets and Raspberries follows the resultant chaos from a failed kidnapping attempt, when a Fiat factory worker helps to rescue an unidentified man following a dangerous car crash. Based on the figure of Gianni Agnelli, Head of the Fiat Corporation from 1966 – 2003, Fo’s fictional account is a hilarious and satirical exploration of the Italian government’s corrupt engagement with industry, and its blatant public scare mongering in the pursuit of power.

This contemporary re-staging of the 1981 classic follows Dario Fo's edict to modify and improvise around his texts both in the spirit of the Commedia dell'Arte tradition, and in order to ensure the play’s contemporary relevance. As such this production seeks to entertain as well as instruct. It includes a musical score inspired by Eurovision style Italian pop and disco and seeks to question the links between corporations and government at local state and federal levels in Australia today.

Fo's plays are written for the 'little people', and to encourage their voice in all public processes of power. This production is staged in the same spirit.

Born in Varese, Italy in 1926, Dario Fo is one of the most highly regarded theatre-makers and political satirists of the second half of the twentieth century, receiving the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1997. Ten years later, he was ranked joint seventh with Stephen Hawking in The (UK) Telegraph’s list of 100 greatest living genii.
