… if the Beatles were more famous than Jesus, then we are more famous than Satan.

Ian Brady

Rainer Werner Fassbinder, the controversial, brilliant and prolific German director and playwright, and most famous as the leading exponent of the German New Wave Cinema, also made a startling contribution to theatre with his Munchen-based anti-theatre.

Written in 1969, pre]paradise sorry nOw, is one of his most disturbing and nightmarish theatre works. An exploration of human brutality, the central plot revolves around an actual case, the infamous "Moors Murders" committed by baby-faced serial killer lovers, Ian Brady and Myra Hindley that took place in Great Britain in the mid ‘60s.

Fassbinder deals with relationships based on violence, falseness, and oppression. In pre]paradise sorry nOw, Fassbinder uses Brady and Hindley’s demented longing for a neo-fascist ‘paradise’ to ridicule notions of man's higher nature. He surrounds them with a black-comedy circus of thugs, whores, transvestites and exploiters who enact repetitive cycles of violence and torture that force us to examine the society we have made and the principles upon which it functions.

Director Christopher Ryan explores Fassbinder's bleakly ironic and ghoulishly jaundiced world-view through pop cultural spectacle and the aesthetics of Facism.

Perversely entertaining, deeply serious, it is a chilling journey that takes us into the dark heart of human behavior and challenges us to change it.
