We think caged birds sing when indeed they cry.

FCA Performance is proud to present the second of two works showcasing the University of Wollongong’s graduating students for 2008 at PACT Youth Theatre, Sydney’s leading contemporary performance space for young people and emerging artists.

Lust. Power. Hypocrisy. Revenge.

In a state where flesh is subject to the laws of the city and the church, an illicit affair threatens to unravel the fabric of government, sever family ties and bring the downfall of two courts. Catastrophe is political and personal as the private sphere is violently confronted by the public in an honour fuelled witch-hunt.

As the affair progresses the body count rises, testing loyalties and bringing the ruling families to their knees. Private crimes become entangled with public policy, intrigue abounds, the spectres of the past haunt the living and there isn't a happy ending in sight.

The White Devil is a study in brutality on a grand scale with the heightened style of Jacobean revenge tragedy re-imagined for the modern stage. There are no ruffs, no frock coats and no swishing capes – just skin and the passions of the body. Lust is answered with blood, suspicion and sex smoulder and the savagery of the court is unleashed.

Performed and designed by UOW graduating students for 2008, under the direction of Tim Maddock. Maddock’s directing credits include Daniel Keene's The Serpent's Teeth for Sydney Theatre Company (2008), Andree Greenwell's The Hanging of Jean Lee (2006), Howard Barker's The Ecstatic Bible (2000).
