Antigone and Creon

An elegant examination into the mechanisms of fascism
Directed by Christopher Ryan
Featuring third year Performance students from the
Faculty of Creative Arts at the University of Wollongong

Antigone and Creon is a theatrical articulation of the tension that often exists between the individual and the state; exploring the relationship between civil society and civil disobedience. It engages with a story fundamental to our understanding of civil society; a story that recognises how the unforseen and the unplanned may result in the unthinkable and the catastrophic.

Antigone and Creon references Greek mythology and the fifth century play by Sophocles as well as Jean Anouilh’s famous retelling during the Nazi occupation of France. It looks to Leni Riefenstahl’s aestheticised and utopian representations of power as order and the ‘triumph of the will’.

The myth of Antigone and Creon could be read as at the extremes of our private / public worlds / the Western psyche, and the everyday dual experience of living under the law and personal sovereignty.

Or maybe it's just a GREAT STORY!
