Internationally renowned Kammer Ensemble in Concert
The Faculty of Creative Arts is delighted to present the KAMMER ENSEMBLE in concert.
Two concerts will take place in the Faculty of Creative Arts (FCA) as part of the inaugural Ensemble-in-Residence program hosted by the Faculty’s School of Music and Drama.
The residency is well underway, and the School’s Sound Composition and Music Production (SCMP) students have already had the benefit of workshopping their compositions with the Ensemble’s seasoned professionals.
Members of the KAMMER ENSEMBLE share a rich musical heritage bringing together years of study and professional experiences living and working in London and continental Europe.
KAMMER is dedicated to performing traditional European chamber music and exploring the ways in which it has inspired composers throughout the world. The ensemble also has a strong interest in the original sounds of Australian music and is committed to performing and commissioning works by Australian composers. The KAMMER combination of winds, strings and piano vividly brings to life the power of contemporary music.
The FCA concerts will feature world premiere performances of original works created by students as well as popular pieces by the Faculty’s own leading Australian composers.
Curator of the residency and coordinator of the music program, Dr Houston Dunleavy, says,
“There is a real buzz amongst the students working with KAMMER. This is an extraordinary opportunity for composers at an early stage of development to work with such a sympathetic and dynamic ensemble.”
The Lunchtime concert will feature the Wollongong premier of Icarus, composed by Dr Dunleavy, a selected work for the Australian Solo Flute Competition in 2003.
Highlights of the Wednesday evening concert include a performance of Stick Dance III by highly acclaimed Australian composer and Faculty Dean, Professor Andrew Schultz and music by American composer Elliott Carter in celebration of his 100th birthday later this year.
The programme also features guest mezzo soprano, Karen Cummings performing cabaret songs by Kurt Weill.
