Cheese & Salomé Sandwich
Season 7-10 May 2008
Devised by First Year Theatre Performance Students
Directed by Drew Fairley
“Dance for me Salomé”
The University of Wollongong’s Faculty of Creative Arts is proud to present its first theatrical performance for the 2008 season, Cheese and Salomé Sandwich, a contemporary reworking of Oscar Wilde’s acclaimed play, Salomé.
Inspired by the infamous Biblical story of Salomé, stepdaughter to King Herod, and daughter of Herodias, the play follows the story of Herod who desires Salomé to dance for him. He’ll give her anything she wants if she grants him this one wish. To Herod’s dismay and her mother’s delight, Salomé’s price is delivered on a silver platter with a side serving of murder.
Cheese & Salomé Sandwich is a devised work created using various ensemble techniques and 37 first-year performance students to create a performance spectacular.
Director Drew Fairley’s widespread credits include recipient of the New York International Fringe Festival Award for Excellence in both comedy and drama for his co-devised production Mongrel; co-creator of No Chance in Hell Hotel; the international smash hit comedy Bangers and Mash, and more recently he was the award winning writer of The Stallion of Death.
This theatrical exploration of decadence, desire and lust is presented by the Faculty of Creative Arts, recently acclaimed for the sell-out season of Oedipus Wrecks (2007). Cheese & Salomé Sandwich is the debut production from the first year performance ensemble.
