Week 11 - 6 8 October 2005
Hammer by Justin Fleming Directed by Erin Taylor
By Arrangement with the Licensor, Justin Fleming c/- Curtis Brown (Aust) Pty Ltd
"I've tried to learn the word for free in ten languages to make it a huge dream, not just small" Simon Redlinger.
Freedom is Simon Redlinger's dream, but how can you be free when you were born in a trap? Duty. Honour. Loyalty. Tradition. Everything is yet another trap. Respected Australian playwright Justin Fleming's Hammer is Simon's journey of mind and body to find freedom.
The After-Dinner Joke by Caryl Churchill Directed by Zoe Steen
By exploring the theme of politicised third-world charity, and in the wake of an unfortunately usurped G8 conference, the performance looks at the complex, globalised world of economic self-interest and obscuring spin that surrounds such issues.
But don't despair - Churchill's Brechtian use of comedy might not solve the problems for you, but it may make the ironies more palatable.
This play, originally written for television and broadcast on BBC1 in 1978, has seen a group of first year performance students investigate the possibilities of collaborative theatre-making using text.
Churchill's script encourages imaginative reading and authoring which has allowed the group to explore both interpretive and devising techniques in performance, in a variety of styles. the result is a full rendering of the text in a contemporary context, and a performance that the students can each own.
Waiting for Lefty by Clifford Odets Directed by Linda Nicholls-Gidley
Odet's exploration of the trade union movement of 30's America provides the impetus for a contemporary examination of labour reform in Australia. The current disenfranchisement of the unions (including the introduction of individual workplace agreements) has fractured the power of the individual worker.
How do we seccessfully marry freedom of the individual and look out for each other?
As their first exercise in performing for the public, our First years will perform three one-act plays from around the world England, USA & Australia in repertoire.
