Euripides "The Bacchae"

Amphitheatre and Performance Space (BLDG25)

As if the entire population but you slipped off the globe during the night....

Pentheus King of Thebes returns home to find the female population has been compelled by an unknown force to join a cult. They have gone to the mountains where Pentheus has heard that they perform debauched rituals and join together in orgies. Dionysus, the leader of this cult, claims he is a god ...and Pentheus's cousin. Cadmus, the one man Pentheus can turn to, tries to convince Pentheus to join in the worship. Is Pentheus the only sane man in Thebes? He vows to stamp out all Dionystic ritual and imprison anyone who worships this false god - including his own mother who is in the mountains celebrating the god with the rest. What would you do if you were the one left behind with what appears to be your sanity?
